The second training session of the second week of the Upshift Training Program continues for Cohort 1 as they had their third session today. The goal of this lesson was to teach students about being a good innovator, highlighting the need for collaboration as a team and team building.
The lesson started with the trainer, Miss Oreo, asking students about progress with the last assignment given to them on using the two categories of research methods to collect data. All the groups have made some incredible progress so far. Two groups decided to use both the field and desk methods, and the other groups settled on using the desk method. The class continued with Miss Stella teaching the students how to edit a document. She showed them how to bold a heading, text-align, and create paragraphs. She also introduced the use of commands such as cut, copy, paste, highlight, etc, and their shortcut methods. The students were then given a wrongly typed letter to edit to aid their understanding.
Miss Oreo introduced a new system of grading where each group gets points based on their punctuality, their involvement in in-class activities, and the games played in class. This encouraged the students to be more active in class. Miss Oreo went ahead to explain to the students what makes a good innovator. She highlighted four main attributes; self-awareness, vision, identifying challenges, and good research skills. She talked about collaboration and leadership among the groups. She also spoke about how to think creatively, which involves looking at things in a new way, using imagination and skills to get good results even when there are constraints. The students then had the “Paper challenge” to enable them to utilize their creative thinking.
At the final part of the session, Miss Oreo taught the students about Team Canvas and Team Building. She explained that the team canvas shows every member of the team what they are working on and how they are working on it. She also explained that it focuses on how well they work together.
Miss Oreo ended the class by giving them one last fun activity. Each group was to come together and build the tallest tower using the newspapers and tape that were provided. The winning team got some points.
