30th March 2021 marked the official day of class lecturing for the Sornko Rotary Cohort 4 training. A total number of twenty-three students were present for the training. The purpose of today’s class was to introduce the students to Technology and Computer Basics. Ahead of today’s lessons, the trainees were paired in a buddy system to aid and promote peer learning and understanding.
The class led by Miss Oreo deliver a presentation on what technology is. In her presentation, she used a video to illustrate the types and evolution of technology. She advised the students not to be scared of technology. According to her, Technology can be used in many fields such as beauty technology, fashion technology, or sport technology. The trainer also explained that a computer is an electronic device that accepts raw data and processes it into information. The students had a brief history lesson on some early innovators and how computers have evolved over time. The students were also given lessons on the different types of data files and computer key shortcuts. She taught them a few shortcuts on how to minimize files, how to access their task managers, and how to go to their file explorers.
Later, the class had a typing exercise online using the link speedtypingonline.com/typing tutor. This activity was fun as this allowed the students to improve their typing skills.
In closing, the students were tasked to write a brief bio of their paired teammates. Miss Oreo also encouraged them to practice more typing, thereafter.
The second session of the week began with the lead trainer Oreo reviewing all assignments submitted by the trainees and advised those who haven’t completed to submit them by the close of the day.
The lead trainer welcomed the students and introduced the class to Efua Gyamfua, the assigned teaching assistant for today’s training. Efua Gyamfua is a recent graduate of the Soronko Rotary Coding for Girls Project Cohort 3.
The teaching assistant delivered training on Microsoft Word its component. She tasked the class to create a word file that contained a brief write-up about their class partners. Through this exercise, students were able to practically demonstrate how to change font styles, sizes, inserting tables as well as creating paragraphs using the “Tab Key”. The students were also taught how to redo and undo using the shortcuts “Ctrl+Y and Ctrl+Z” and how to copy, cut, paste, using “Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X, and Ctrl+V” respectively.
Afterward, students were asked to download their coursework that contained a letter that was poorly edited. Together with Miss Oreo, the students edited the letter file in Microsoft word by incorporating the lesson given in class. They were able to align the text, change the font style, and correct errors within the letter file. In Closing, Miss Oreo encouraged everyone to keep practicing and as well explore other Microsoft Word features which were not discussed in class.
