As part of its community engagement policy, Golden Exotics Limited partnered with Soronko Academy to equip its female workers and women living in communities around the banana plantation with digital skills. This was to commemorate International Women’s Day in line with this year’s theme, “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.”
The Golden Exotics Head Office at East Legon, and the banana farms at Asutuare, were buzzing with excitement on the 8th of March 2023. Ms Courtney Letsa trained 30 female staff gathered physically, with 11 others joining virtually via Zoom, for a Digital Skills Training at the head office in Accra, whiles Ms Leticia Amavih moderated the session at the banana farms, Asutuare with about 40 women present to celebrate International Women’s Day.
The event was aimed at equipping women with relevant digital skills to thrive in today’s world. The program kicked off with a baseline assessment of the women’s knowledge of technology, which revealed that most of them owned smartphones and used the internet.
The women were given insights into various digital tools such as Google Suite, WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, Google Meet, MS Teams, Slack, Discord, Twitter, Youtube, Social Media etc.
On 10th March 2023, the team moved to the Volta River Authority Clubhouse for another training for women living in Akuse and its environs, where Golden Exotics Limited has its farms. The event, expertly moderated by Leticia Amavih, had about 100 women and two community leaders in attendance.
The ladies were asked to identify eight Ghanaian female entrepreneurs as an icebreaker activity. The facilitator went on to deliver an engaging presentation on WhatsApp Business, highlighting its features such as the catalogue, labels, greeting messages, away messages, and quick replies. The women were also taught internet security, creating strong passwords, setting up 2-step verification for social media accounts, and visiting safe websites. The team also gave them practical tips to stay safe online.
As the event progressed, the women were introduced to various software for personal and professional development, such as Canva, Pinterest, Google Garage, Zoom, Facebook Business, Telegram, and Slack. Special mention was made of Flo, a period tracking app, which could help them monitor their health and well-being.
The day ended with a Hackathon, where the women brainstormed business solutions through social media and online marketing for an imaginary character, Ama. Awards were given to outstanding participants.
The digital skills training program for Women event was a success. Special thank you, to Golden Exotics Limited for celebrating women by equipping them with essential digital skills to help them be more productive with their businesses, and at work. #DigitalSkills #Goldenexoticslimited #IWD2023 #internationalwomensday
