The fifth week of the Women in Digital Skills training kicked off on 15th February 2021 with a lesson on “Building a Website with WordPress”. The class began with a recap of what the students did the previous week and an assessment of their wireframe for their website development. The trainer Cyril explained to the trainees the concept of single page websites and how it works. He explained that to create a single-page website using a page builder like elementor, the students had to become conversant with the concept of the various widgets. The trainer explained further the uses and meaning of the various widgets on Elementor and how they can be used effectively to design or build a website.
Using a local website allows users to have a single website that serves as both the development and live site. With the wireframe developed in week 4, the trainees were tasked to create the first two sections of their website as part of their project work. The trainer explained to the class how the body of a website is created and how they can edit it to suit their wireframe. The students also explored the various options under the customize settings tab, the heading, accordion, image box, and inner section needed to be used for the website development.
According to the lead trainer, it is always advisable to pen down basic information like colour code, font size, and style among others before one begins to build a website. He then demonstrated widgets such as heading, accordion, image box, and inner section are used for the website.
The trainees broke out into groups to continue the development of their business website. The students were able to develop two out of the six sections of their web pages. They were also able to insert the images and change the font style of their write-up.
These sessions wrapped up for Week five, in the coming week students would be completing their project work. We keenly look forward to their project presentation.
