Upshift Training Program Cohort 2 started sessions for its 3rd week on August 16, 2021. During this lesson, students were introduced to a variety of research methods that they could use to gather the information they needed for their project.
The session started with the students practising their typing using “speedtypingonline.com”. The trainer, Miss Oreo, went around checking each student’s accuracy and guiding them on how to improve their scores. After about thirty minutes of practice typing, each group gave a presentation on their progress so far with their research. They spoke about their interactions with stakeholders and also highlighted their ups and downs throughout the whole procedure. After all the groups had presented, Miss Fauzia gave her general feedback.
Miss Oreo gave each group a team canvas sheet to fill in. They were to answer the questions; “what is the purpose?”, which highlights why the team was created; “what are the goals and objectives?”, which highlights their activities thus far; and “what are the values?”, which highlights what value the team exhibits.
The students then played a game where each group was given a newspaper and each group member had to be able to stand on the newspaper. The game was to help them develop ways to think through constraints and limitations. After this activity, Miss Oreo took the students through “Brainstorming and idea design”. They crafted problem statements using the problem tree and the 5 WHYS. The problem tree helps them find the root cause of the problem and understand the consequences. They answered questions like “How might we…?”
To end the session, Miss Oreo gave the students an assignment. Each group is to use the problem tree and the 5 Whys to find out more information about the problem they identified in their community.
